Favorite advice for parents

“What’s the best parenting advice you can give me?” My friend’s question surprised me one day. My writing specialty is parenting and health, but I’ve never been asked that question before. It’s not easy for me to consider myself an “expert,” although I’m a mother of two and have interviewed experts in the parenting field for a dozen years. I’m also launching my blog and website today that focuses on parenting, health and wellness, and family life. To mark that occasion, I want to share my favorite advice for my friend and other parents:
First, “Instill a strong faith in your child.” Teach them to believe in a power greater than themselves. Faith provides a solid foundation for a fulfilling life – what parent doesn’t want that for their child?
Second, “Love your child unconditionally.” It may sound simple, but to love your child without criticizing her and giving her freedom to make mistakes is no easy task. Never allow your child to think for a second that you don’t love her. Say, “I love you,” out loud and often to your kids. They’re never too “old” for hugs.
Third, “Provide a lot of unstructured play time.” Shuttling your children around to too many activities during the week and weekend isn’t really fun for you and your kids. Our daughters (ages 7 and 11) participate in one or two extra activities a school semester. That keeps our calendar full as it is. Encourage outdoor play time. If possible, keep a room in your home that doesn’t need “cleaning up.” Our basement floor remains covered with Littlest Pet Shop toys, representing hours of imagination, laughter and fun that comes from unstructured play time.
